Don’t panic – you haven’t been ‘dumped’ by your genuine, authentic audience. If you’ve cultivated your following from real people who are interested in what you have to say, not much will have changed.
However, if you’ve been replying on looking good by being followed by a bunch of computer bots, now’s the time to wave goodbye to those fake followers. Meta has carried out a massive clean up to purge millions of bot accounts.
This change hasn’t only affected small businesses. It’s been quite a shock to everyone, so if your follower count dropped you’re in good company; celebrities have been impacted too! Kylie Jenner apparently lost 14 million ‘followers’ overnight, Taylor Swift lost 5 million and Christiano Renaldo may have lost his position as the person with the highest number of followers. (If you joined in any of my online workshops last year you’ll know the top influencers of 2025 – well that’s all up in the air now!)
How does this affect you?
Well, assuming you’re not relying on bots, spam, fake engagement or anything else nasty like that, you shouldn’t be affected at all. Just carry on doing what you’re doing – post interesting, useful content that your intended audience is likely to enjoy and find valuable.
Remember, social media is social – people like engaging with people, and if you’re going to do business with someone or recommend a business to someone else, it’s probably going to be run by a person you like, respect and trust.
If you’re not affected by this mega clean-up because you’re not on Instagram, why not?
If you’d like some guidance to get going, set up your profile, create a strategy, bounce around content ideas… that’s exactly why I’m here. I can help you, or I can do it and then manage it for you.
